Ideaventions – A Discovery Lab for Kids hosts a celebration of science and engineering with hands-on activities for kids of all ages. Attendees will be able to build rockets, explore circuits, play with robotics, and prepare for Halloween by mixing a potion or two. Elementary and middle schoolers and their families are especially encouraged to attend.

The 5th annual Future Focus EXPO, hosted by Region 2000 Technology Council, is a career exploration event for middle school and high school students. NASA’s Learning Environments and Research Network and the Georgia Institute of Technology have teamed up to create the ePDN, a new initiative dedicated to preparing K-12 teachers to engage their students in STEM subjects through the use of NASA-developed learning materials and resources. Teachers wanting to enhance their instructional skills, meet professional development goals, or find new and exciting resources to use in learning environments can apply to one of the free courses.

Defense contractor General Dynamics, facing an engineer shortage, has developed a program for developing young engineering talent. Eighteen seventh- and eight-grade students who have shown some math and science skills were selected for eCrew, which focuses on giving the students hands-on projects, like launching rockets and building working model cranes.

The world’s number two professional golfer Phil Mickelson says that some of his success on the links comes from a firm grasp of math and science — he can calculate the odds of sinking a putt from how many feet away the ball is from the hole, for example. Today, the Mickelson ExxonMobile Teacher Academy in Jersey City, N.J. is helping third, fourth, and fifth grade science teachers hone their math and science teaching skills.
