Outreach: Carnegie Mellon Robotics Program

Carnegie Mellon Robotics ProgramCarnegie Mellon’s new Fostering Innovation through Robotics Exploration (FIRE) program, a DARPA-backed effort to increase middle and high schoolers’ interest in STEM and computer science, will support the creation of programs such as game-like virtual worlds where robot programs can be tested and computerized tutors that teach mathematics and computer science in the context of robotics.

Outreach: University of California-Irvine Chemistry

UCI ClassroomThe UCI Chemistry Outreach Program was developed to address the issue of declining opportunities to learn chemistry. In the program, a graduate student or postdoctoral coordinator sends teams of graduate and undergraduate student volunteers to Orange County schools to perform demonstrations and talk about chemistry. The coordinator contacts the high schools, develops the demonstrations, recruits and trains the volunteers, and supplies the volunteers with materials needed for the demonstrations.

Students Summer: Computer Chip Camp, Boise, June 15-17 and 22-24

Pathways to Computer Tech FuturesMicron Foundation’s Chip Camp for Boise, Idaho area seventh and eighth graders offers students an opportunity to learn more about the intricate business of designing and manufacturing semiconductors and integrated circuits. This year’s three-day Chip Camp sessions will run June 15-17 and June 22-24 at the Dehryl A. Dennis Professional Technology Center in Boise and will serve 120 students from 40 different schools. Students Summer: Cosmological Physics, UC-Berkeley, July 19-30, 2010

Berkeley Center Global Teachers' AcademyThe Berkeley Center for Cosmological Physics Global Teachers’ Academy is seeking student applicants for its fourth annual two week summer workshop for high school students and teachers. The “Physics in and Through Cosmology” workshop will be held at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory adjacent to the University of California, Berkeley Campus beginning Monday, July 19 and ending Friday, July 30. The deadline for applications is June 30.
