When the Intel Science Talent Search semifinalists were announced last month, two high schools had more than any other in the country. Ossining High School, part of a very diverse, increasingly Hispanic town in Westchester County, best known for Sing Sing Correctional Facility, was one of the two.

The Akron Global Polymer Academy of The University of Akron is hosting the third annual Rubber Band Contest for Young Inventors to encourage students in grades 5-8 to demonstrate their creativity and ingenuity by creating an invention that incorporates the use of rubber bands. Deadline for Entries: Wednesday, February 16, 2011.

The 2011 ThinkQuest International Competition challenges students to apply their critical thinking, communication, and technology skills to a real-world problem. Teams research, develop, and test their solution before presenting it to a global audience. Students and their coaches put their ideas and skills to the test in one of three events.

The No Boundaries National Competition gives students the chance to learn about opportunities at NASA, explore careers in STEM, and win prizes that are out of this world. After completing the project and presenting their work to peers, student groups are encouraged to enter their project in the competition.

Even unsuccessful contestants in the FIRST Lego League competition come up with imaginative ideas. A case in point is the team from Urbandale, Iowa. Challenged to build robots to tackle a biomedical engineering problem, they decided on cataracts.

The Siemens We Can Change the World Challenge gives students the opportunity, tools and inspiration to become agents of change. Through March 15, 2010, elementary and middle school classes across the country will be challenged to create sustainable, reproducible environmental improvements in their classroom or school. Top prizes will include a chance to appear on TV, a grant for the sponsoring school, a trip to New York City for the teacher, and more.

Arizona State University will sponsor a TEAMS competition for students in grades 9-12, Thursday, February 17, 2011. TEAMS (Test of Engineering Aptitude, Math and Science) is an annual theme‐based competition that gives students the chance to discover engineering through the practical applications of math and science. Students become part of the action as they answer engineering questions about everyday world challenges. The 2011 Challenge centers around the need to develop dependable, resourceful and economical, forms of energy.

Igniting Creative Energy is a national student challenge to motivate learning, ignite the imagination, and fuel students’ creative potential. Students are invited to participate by creating create a project that can communicate their ideas about energy and water efficiency via a science project, essay, story, artwork, photograph, music, video or web site project. Prizes include a trip to Washington, DC. and $1,000 for the winning school. Submission Deadline: March 4, 2011.
