Igniting Creative Energy (ICE) is a national student challenge to motivate learning, ignite the imagination, and fuel the creative potential in youth.

All educators K-12 in the United States and parts of Canada* are invited to participate. This educational competition is designed to encourage students to learn more about energy and water conservation and the environment.

Student entries must reflect the theme Energy Efficiency/Water Efficiency and demonstrate an understanding of what an individual, family or group can do to make a difference in their home or community.
Students may express their ideas in the form of documented science projects, essays, stories, artwork, photographs, music or video or web site projects. They may also submit recent service projects, or results from the National Energy Foundation’s own Energy Patrol activities. Please visit guidelines for further details.

Directions to Students

1. Think about how you use electricity, gasoline, natural gas…energy (ex. electricity, gasoline, natural gas and/or if you could use less or how you could help your community use less).

2. Think of a creative new way to use less energy.

3. Use your talents and skills to create an exciting unusual project that will communicate your idea to someone else. Your project could be a science project, essay, story, artwork, photograph, music, video or web site project.

4. Write a one page explanation of how your project relates to the theme. Be sure to include the following:

  • What motivated you to enter this Challenge?
  • What actions and ideas are you trying to express?
  • What is the impact of your project in your life and/or in the lives of others?
