Kids are natural tinkerers and explores. That’s why ASEE is hosting an interactive workshop on Teaching Engineering through Making on Sunday, June 26, on the second day of our annual K-12 Workshop in New Orleans. AnnMarie Thomas, an associate professor in the University St. Thomas’s School of Engineering and author of Making Makers: Kids, Tools, and the Future of Innovation will lead an activity on creative circuitry using play dough – a fun lesson in electricity for all ages.

Teams of middle school students use the engineering design process to design, build, and test a pair of wearable platform or high-heeled shoes, taking into consideration the stress and strain on the wearer’s foot. Could makerspaces transform career, technical, and vocational education? The U.S. Department of Education believes so and has launched a CTE Makeover Challenge to kick-start the process. Up to 10 schools could win $20,000 in cash and other awards to turn their makerspace designs into reality. Submissions due April 1, 2016.

Innovation, STEM, and Intellectual Property is the theme for the United States Patent and Trademark Office’s 3rd Annual National Summer Teacher Institute, to be held July 17-22, 2016 at Michigan State University.
