Engineers Without Borders-USA has been awarded the Turner Prize for Innovation in Construction Technology by the The National Building Museum for its work connecting engineering students with international development projects. Come join the public ceremony on Sept. 21, 6:30-8:00 p.m., at the National Building Museum in Washington, DC. Presenters will share EWB-USA’s efforts to provide clean water, sustainable energy, and needed infrastructure to communities across the world while also instilling a sense of global responsibility in the next generation of engineers. Cost: Free for Students, $20 non-members, $12 members.

Engineering Saturdays at the University of Texas, Arlington is an outreach program that showcases hands-on engineering fun and provides flexibility for a family with different ages to all find interesting things to do. Des Plaines Public Library will sponsor a day of engineering exploration for children in grades 3-8, Sat., Oct. 16, 2010, with interactive displays and fun, educational presentations designed to enhance interest in engineering, math, and science. Engineers Bob Johnson, Chas Hague, and others will introduce budding young engineers to the Structural Engineers Association of Illinois exhibit. Cost: Free.

It will culminate in a two-day Expo Expo at the Austin Convention Center with over 200 exhibits of hands-on, fun science and engineering activities to inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers.

Ideaventions – A Discovery Lab for Kids hosts a celebration of science and engineering with hands-on activities for kids of all ages. Attendees will be able to build rockets, explore circuits, play with robotics, and prepare for Halloween by mixing a potion or two. Elementary and middle schoolers and their families are especially encouraged to attend.
