Summer STEM Research for Students
The American Society for Engineering Education administers two paid summer research programs for students in U.S. Navy laboratories: The Science and Engineering Apprenticeship Program (SEAP) for high school students, and the Naval Research Enterprise Internship Program (NREIP) for college and graduate school students. Deadline for applications, transcripts, and recommendation letters is October 23, 2015.

If NASA loves the The Martian, it may be because the 21st Century Fox film starring Matt Damon draws on real-life technologies the U.S. space agency already has or is developing for a manned mission to Mars.
Hack him back! Why just watch The Martian when you can participate in a design contest (and possibly win $25,000) to help marooned astronaut Mark Watney, track his progress on interactive maps, or download free activities to incorporate space science and engineering in your classroom? 
The Allen Distinguished Educators award program recognizes innovative K-12 teachers who “break the mold” and help students become thinkers, makers, and creators through computer science, engineering, and entrepreneurship. Applications for the $25,000 award are due November 1, 2015.
In this NASA activity, students in grades 1-8 learn about the challenges of space nutrition and designing food packaging by observing, measuring, comparing, and contrasting the ripening of fruits and vegetables when exposed to air and the effect of chemical treatments to inhibit ripening.
To celebrate Earth Science Week, the American Geosciences Institute is hosting a photography contest for people of all ages, a visual arts contest for elementary students, and an essay contest for students in grades 6 to 9. Deadline for submission is Friday, October 16, 2015. 
The year is 2032 and your middle-school explorers have successfully achieved a manned mission to Mars! After establishing criteria to help look for signs of life, they conduct a scientific experiment in which they evaluate three “Martian” soil samples and determine if any contains life.
In this lesson to teach middle school students how a spacecraft gets from the surface of the Earth to Mars, students first investigate rockets and how they are able to get us into space, then discuss the nature of an orbit as well as how orbits enable us to get from planet to planet.
