The 2009 Women in Science Booklet is produced by Science/AAAS in collaboration with the L’Oréal Corporate Foundation. The interview profiles of young women at the start of their science careers tell their stories of passion and persistence —what drives and excites them about their work in the sciences. Many schools include project-based learning in their classes, but few have embraced the concept quite as completely as the Da Vinci Science and Design schools in Hawthorne, Calif. “Actually, PBL is not worked into the curriculum, it is our curriculum,” says Nicole Tempel, Da Vinci Principal. Engineering Discovery Days, April 23 and 24, continues the tradition of sharing the work of the College of Engineering, U. Washington, with students, teachers and families. While both days are free and open to all, each day has a primary focus. Registration is required for groups of 10 or more and for groups arriving in buses.

NASA’s Science Mission Directorate has launched Mission:Science, a new Web site created specifically for teenagers. Through Mission:Science, teens can access current NASA spacecraft data for school science projects, conduct real experiments with NASA scientists and locate space-related summer internships.

President Obama has proposed major changes for the nation’s space program. His budget for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration would cancel the agency’s program to send astronauts back to the Moon, invest in new space technologies and turn to commercial companies for transportation beyond low-Earth orbit. But the plan has drawn skeptical and at times hostile questioning from members of Congress.

The Center for Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) is a remotely sensed data management, systems development, and research field center for the U.S. Geological Survey, part of the U.S. Department of the Interior.
Teachers will find on the site aerial photography, satellite imagery, digitized maps and a vast image gallery, and well as online imaging programs such as EarthExplorer, the USGS Geographic Data Download, and the USGS Web Mapping Portal.
