ASEE’s Pre-College Engineering Education Division (PCEE) has a new grant program for PreK-12 teachers who seek support for the implementation of an engineering project in their classroom in the 2019-2020 academic year. Teachers must be affiliated with the division. Applications due July 1, 2019.

The NFPA Fluid Power Challenge is a competition that challenges eighth grade students to solve an engineering problem using fluid power. They work in teams to design and build a fluid power mechanism, and then compete against other teams in a timed competition.

The George Lucas Educational Foundation, which was created to help education catch up with the many technical advancements in how we interact with each other and the world, maintains a comprehensive website called Edutopia, which features resources and videos for teachers. It is designed to spread the word about ideal, interactive learning environments and enable others to adapt these successes locally. Edutopia contains an archive of continually updated best practices, from classroom tips to recommendations for district-wide change.

Many schools include project-based learning in their classes, but few have embraced the concept quite as completely as the Da Vinci Science and Design schools in Hawthorne, Calif. “Actually, PBL is not worked into the curriculum, it is our curriculum,” says Nicole Tempel, Da Vinci Principal. Nearly every aspect of learning is tied to a project.
