In this lesson, students in grades 4-12 learn about the history of catapults and how they work. They assemble their own catapult model, making adjustments to improve its performance. Students gain engineering experience while learning principles of physics and working with the scientific processes of experimentation and trial and error.

Once a week, 11-year-olds at Ashmount Primary School in North London settle in front of computers and put on headsets. A few minutes later, they’re connected online to math teachers thousands of miles away in the Indian state of Punjab. Ashmount is one of three British state schools that outsource part of their teaching to India through BrightSpark Education.

Four Public broadcasting outlets have formed the STEM Collaborative to demonstrate that math can be both fun and relevant. The website’s challenges engage students in such projects as building a skateboard ramp and measuring a rollercoaster.

Is there an algebra overkill? John W. Myres, a retired California school teacher and superintendent, thinks so. Myres notes that most school districts require all students to take one to two years of algebra to graduate and suggests this may be too much of a good thing.

The web-based, real-time American Math Challenge, set for October 26 and 27, lets students from across the U.S. compete against each other. It’s open to either individual K-12 students or entire schools and classes. Students from schools that register at least 20 pupils are eligible for prizes.

The American Math Challenge invites students to join in online, real-time mathematics competitions on October 26 and 27, 8 am – 11 pm. Open to individual students or entire schools and classes in grades K-12, the Challenge offers prizes including a gold medal and an iPad. Winners can become part of Team America, competing in the global World Math Day contest on March 1, 2011.
