Competition: Human-powered Submarine Race

ISR-10 ArchimedePlans are already underway for the 20011 International Submarine Race, to be held next summer at the Naval Surface Warfare Center’s Carderock test tank facility in Bethesda, Maryland. The race tests the creative skills of young engineering students from schools and colleges throughout the world, as teams compete in one- and two-person “wet” submarines submerged along a 100-meter measured course.

Virtual SkiesNASA’s Virtual Skies website provides an engaging yet informal way to present aviation topics to high school and academically advanced middle school students. The Aeronautics, Navigation, Weather, Air Traffic Management, Communications, Airport Design modules involve students in decision-making and collaborative skills using principles of algebra, geometry and calculus. Each section includes on-line activities complemented by downloadable print materials that can be used in the classroom to supplement the geography, mathematics, and science concepts.

Student Programs: INSPIRE at NASA. Deadline: June 30, 2010

High school students throughout the United States are invited to participate in NASA’s 2010-2011 Interdisciplinary National Science Program Incorporating Research Experience, or INSPIRE, a multitier year-round program designed for students in grades 9 to 12th who are interested in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education and careers. Applications are being accepted through June 30, 2010.
