“Engineering for your Community” is the theme of the National Academy of Engineering’s 2018 EngineerGirl! Essay Contest. Girls and boys in grades 3 to 12 can win up to $500 for writing pleas to persuade local or national officials to improve such infrastructure such as roads, trash collection, and the 9-1-1 emergency response system.

Essay Contest from the National Academies & National Academy of Engineering focuses on 50 Years of Engineering in Society and how engineering might change life in the next five decades. Students in three age categories – elementary, middle, and high school – compete for monetary prizes and recognition through research and writing essays on one of several topics. The DuPont Challenge is an essay competition for students in grades 7-12 that runs through January 31, 2014. It focuses on scientific and technological developments that create solutions to pressing global challenges, such as feeding the world or protecting the environment. Students and their sponsoring teachers can win more than $100,000 in awards, including a trip to Disney World and NASA’s Kennedy Space Center.
