Nickelodeon: Earth Day Events Promotion

The children’s programming TV network Nickelodeon is offering to feature camera footage of events with groups performing “green activities” that promote a healthy Earth environment. Submitted footage may be featured on the network or on their website.

This week-long, standards-aligned teacher workshop, June 6-10, 2011 is being held at San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park for those K-5 teachers. The workshop will explore investigation skills through the lens of forest ecosystems. Topics covered include climate, plant and animal interactions, and conservation. The workshop is designed to make science teaching more exciting and accessible for kindergarten through fifth grade teachers. Cost: $100 ($50 refunded upon course completion).
Project SMART (Science and Mathematics Achievement through Research Training) is a 4-week Summer Institute at the University of New Hampshire, July 5-29, 2011, for talented high school students in grades 10 and 11. It challenges, educates, and motivates students in science and mathematics while acquainting them with the environment and resources of the University as a place for higher education and research. Cost: $3,000 for full four weeks, $2,500 without weekend stays.Applications accepted until all places are filled.
Teachers of grades 6 through 8 from Northrup Grumman communities have a chance to join an expedition either to the Bahamas, to examine coastal ecology, or to the edge of the Arctic, to study climate change.
SnowSchool is a winter ecology education program that aims to expose children to the fun and wonder of their winter environment. SnowSchool sites include unspoiled national forests, nordic ski areas, regional parks, vibrant nature centers and preserves, colleges, universities, and some of the nation’s most spectacular national parks. Visitors to the online site can find snow-related lesson plans, a page on snow science, and links to other websites.
The Camp-In programs at COSI Columbus described as the “ultimate indoor camping experience for girls and boys,” has taken environmental “Green” as its 2011 theme. Participants spend 19 hours immersed in all that COSI has to offer enhanced by themed workshops, an Extreme Screen film, and more. 2011 Dates: Various, Jan. – May.
The 2011 SeaWorld and Busch Gardens Environmental Excellence Awards recognize the efforts of students and teachers across the country who are working at the grassroots level to protect and preserve the environment. All K-12 schools in the United States and formally recognized school groups, such as a grade level, classroom or club are eligible to apply. Public, private and licensed home schools are also eligible. Awards include $10,000 for eight award-winning projects and all expenses-paid trip to a SeaWorld or Busch Gardens park for the awards event. DEADLINE: Dec. 1, 2010.
