The National Energy Technology Laboratory maintains a list of educational resources and opportunities for all levels of education. The goal of NETL’s education programs is to enhance interest in math and science and to provide resources and instructional materials. NETL provides research participation, workshops, career days, science fairs, instructional materials, in-house tour information, community outreach programs, and events.

Multi-program Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico provides a number of different programs and materials for learners and educators at all levels. Last year, more than 1,200 students took advantage of educational opportunities at LANL. The lab offers high school work experience options, online resources for both teachers and students, student profiles, internships, teacher professional development, conferences, educational tours, mentoring opportunities, undergraduate programs, graduate programs, and a mobile science museum.

The PBS Design Squad Trash to Treasure Competition Challenge invites kids ages 5-19 to recycle, reuse, and re-engineer everyday materials into an out-of-the box invention. Three winners will come to Boston to see their designs built by Continuum, a design consultancy, and will appear on the Design Squad show and Website. 25 finalists will also be featured on the Website. Contest Deadline: September 5, 2010.

Drexel University’s Summer Music Technology (SMT) program August 2-6, 2010, introduces high school students (esp. grades 10 and 11) to the technology of digital music to reveal the influence and importance of engineering, science, and mathematics in music performance, recording, and listening. The Engineering/Technology Careers Exploring Program, from Learning for Life, along with the American Society for Engineering Education, is introducing more youth to careers in engineering and technology. These and other organizations are launching a 2010—2012 Engineering/Technology Careers Emphasis campaign in April. Presently, Learning for Life serves close to 1 million youth in over 14,000 schools and organizations across the country.

National Robotics Week, April 10-18, 2010, recognizes robotics technology as a pillar of 21st century American innovation, highlights its growing importance in a wide variety of application areas, and emphasizes its ability to inspire technology education. A week-long series of events and activities is planned to increase public awareness of the growing importance of “robo-technology.”

Held at the National Electronics Museum in Linthicum, Maryland, April 24, 2010, 10am-3pm, RobotFest invites students of all ages and those with the unquenchable urge to create new, previously unseen forms from lifeless electronics and mechanical parts of metal and plastic.
