The Women in Engineering Program at the University of Maryland will hold the 2011 DREAM Conference for girls in grades 11 and 12 on February 26, 2011, welcoming over 300 participants to the University of Maryland campus for a series of workshops, forums, demonstrations and discussions to ignite interest in engineering.

The Cornell Center for Materials Research offers excellent education resources for teachers, including Lending Library of Experiments, with science and engineering lesson plans and activity sheets. Teachers in the area can borrow kits associated with these activities, free of charge, and arrange classroom and lab visits for their students.

Baltimore’s Maryland Science Center invites everyone to join Harry Potter Day, November 20, 2010. The screening of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” in the IMAX theater, will be accompanied by day filled with activities for kids of all ages, from the creation of chemical potions, to a hunt for horcruxes, and mapping of the stars. The 2011 SeaWorld and Busch Gardens Environmental Excellence Awards recognize the efforts of students and teachers across the country who are working at the grassroots level to protect and preserve the environment. All K-12 schools in the United States and formally recognized school groups, such as a grade level, classroom or club are eligible to apply. Public, private and licensed home schools are also eligible. Awards include $10,000 for eight award-winning projects and all expenses-paid trip to a SeaWorld or Busch Gardens park for the awards event. DEADLINE: Dec. 1, 2010.

The U.S. Army has announced that registration is now open for the eCYBERMISSION STEM competition. Students in grades six through nine must utilize innovation, creativity, and interest in STEM education in the free, web-based contest. Students on winning teams can get up to $8,000 in U.S. EE Savings Bonds. Registration for teams closes December 17, 2010.
