The Center of Science and Industry (COSI) in Columbus, OH, offers several summer science and engineering camps for kids of all ages. Teens can explore amusement park technology, robotics, and video games. Pre-teens can explore planet Earth, aeronautics, and animal adaptations. Even the little ones can dig for dinos, visit a local watershed, and build and launch boats. Level: 5-16-year-olds.

This week-long residential program, June 6-10, 2010, is designed to provide a fun and introductory engineering, science, and technology experience for girls entering 7th and 8th grades. Attendees will be exposed to the various science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) careers and encouraged to explore their personal interests through group projects and design competitions. The Akron Global Polymer Academy of The University of Akron is hosting the third annual Rubber Band Contest for Young Inventors to encourage students in grades 5-8 to demonstrate their creativity and ingenuity by creating an invention that incorporates the use of rubber bands. Deadline for Entries: Wednesday, February 16, 2011.
The 2011 ThinkQuest International Competition challenges students to apply their critical thinking, communication, and technology skills to a real-world problem. Teams research, develop, and test their solution before presenting it to a global audience. Students and their coaches put their ideas and skills to the test in one of three events.
The No Boundaries National Competition gives students the chance to learn about opportunities at NASA, explore careers in STEM, and win prizes that are out of this world. After completing the project and presenting their work to peers, student groups are encouraged to enter their project in the competition.
The NFPA Fluid Power Challenge is a competition that challenges eighth grade students to solve an engineering problem using fluid power. They work in teams to design and build a fluid power mechanism, and then compete against other teams in a timed competition.
In this lesson, students in grades 3 through 8 assume the role of building engineers, testing several materials to determine which would provide the best house insulation. They learn about the role of insulation in preventing heat transfer and discuss the importance of energy conservation in buildings.
Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day (Girl Day), for 1st through 8th grade students, will be held this year at the University of Texas at Austin on Saturday, February 26, 2011 from 2 to 5 p.m. Families and educators are encouraged to join their students at for an afternoon of engineering fun. Girl Day gives students a chance to have fun doing grade-specific, hands-on engineering activities; meet students, professors and engineers from industry, and see what it’s like to be an engineer.
