Nominate STEM Teachers for Presidential Award

Nominate an outstanding mathematics, science, or computer science teacher for the 2013 Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST). Nominations for teachers in grades 7 to 12 are due April 1.

Applications are now being accepted for the 2013 Siemens STEM Institute, an all-expenses-paid week of professional development for 50 middle and high school science and math teachers, and for a two-week Science Teachers as Researchers summer fellowship.
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) National Science Bowl is a nationwide academic competition that tests students’ knowledge in all areas of science. High school and middle school students are quizzed in a fast paced question-and-answer format similar to Jeopardy. Competing teams from diverse backgrounds are comprised of four students, one alternate, and a teacher who serves as an advisor and coach.
ASEE has put together a public/private partnership to develop ways of engaging students and teachers in engineering. Participants will learn about innovative, hands-on, project-based engineering activities, courses, curriculum options, events, outreach programs, professional development, and competitions.
NASA is providing several new webinars for educators, which include hands-on activity demonstrations for specific grade levels. Additionally, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln is offering an online course on climate research applications with funding from the NASA Innovations in Climate Education program. Applications for the course are due August 20, 2012.
Project CANDLE is a partnership to Create an Alliance to Nurture Design in Lighting Education. Some activities include: travel awards that expose students to career opportunities in lighting; the mentorship of a future lighting educator through the IALD Future Lighting Educator Fellowship; an annual Lighting Industry Advisory Group (LIAG) Roundtable; and outreach to high school students.
From art to aerospace, computer science plays a vital role in virtually every field and innovation. Yet few U.S. students pursue computer science or engineering degrees. The Computer Science Student Network (CS2N), a collaborative research project between Carnegie Mellon University and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), aims to change that with a site full of engaging activities, competitions, step-by-step programming lessons, animation software, and free courses for teachers.
What does quality STEM teaching and learning look like? Where can teachers find resources? STEMx, a just-launched collaboration of 13 state STEM education networks developed by Battelle, offers a way for everyone from educators to policymakers to parents to share proven STEM techniques and tools.
The Conference for the Advancement of Science Teaching (CAST) connects science educators and policymakers from across Texas and beyond. CAST 2012 is Nov. 8-10 in Corpus Christi, Texas. Included in the registration price is access to more than 650 free workshops tailored to specific grade levels and subject matters.
