The Computer Highly Interactive Program (C.H.I.P.) camp at Missouri University of Science and Technology, Rolla, MO, July 17-21, 2010, is for high school juniors and seniors who love working with computers and digital technologies. C.H.I.P. campers will enjoy “hands-on” computing in a variety of fields, includingComputer Engineering , Computer Science, and Information Science & Technology. Cost: Resident: $445; Commuter: $345. Five Mad Science summer camps are being offered at the Science Museum of Virginia. These one-week, non-residential camps for students in grades 1-6 offer a daily combination of in-class discovery and exploration, outdoor games and physical activities and hands-on applications of the scientific principles presented. Campers create a variety of take-home projects and participate in snack-tivities while exploring how science affects the world around us. Dates: Varied, June 20-September 2, 2011. Costs: Range from $49 to $269.
This week-long residential program, June 6-10, 2010, is designed to provide a fun and introductory engineering, science, and technology experience for girls entering 7th and 8th grades. Attendees will be exposed to the various science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) careers and encouraged to explore their personal interests through group projects and design competitions. The ExxonMobil Bernard Harris Summer Science Camp (BHSSC) is a free, academic program for students entering grade 6,7, or 8 in the fall of 2010. Held on college campuses across the country, these 2-week residential camps provide activities, experiments, projects, and field experiences to enrich students’ mathematics, science, technology, and communication skills; introduce students to college life; and stimulate their interest in science and engineering as a potential career path. Campers attend classes that include problem solving, study, research, writing and communication skills. 2011 information to be announced.
The Center for Excellence in Education sponsors the Research Science Institute, the National Lab Skills Initiative, and the USA Biology Olympiad. The organization is a strong advocate for gifted education and contributes to the national debate on education reform. The Center actively supports developing scholars through its programs for high school through post-graduate students.
Summer camp isn’t always about crafts, swimming, and mosquito bites anymore. In Warner Robins, Ga., the STARBASE Robins Engineering Academy allows middle school students to gain familiarity with basic engineering principles and hands-on prototyping on a 3D printer. No 2011 information provided.
