Students’ Summer: Lego Robotics Classes

The Journey Museum in Rapids City, SD, is offering two NASA LEGO-Robotics workshops for students, June 9, 2011 and August 4, 2011. Participants will engage in challenges that can be shared with students to encourage the use of imagination, problem-solving skills and team work. Cost: $25 per workshop, $15 for members.

The Bagley College of Engineering Summer Research Program, QUEST, provides opportunities for gifted and talented, rising high school seniors three weeks, July 11-29, 2011, working in world-class laboratories at Mississippi State University. The program will expose students to careers in engineering research, and provide an innovative research opportunity. Enrichment seminars will help participants develop knowledge and skills needed to be successful students and researchers. Quest is a highly competitive program, not a summer camp. Application deadline: April 15, 2011. Cost: $500.
Illinois Aerospace Institute summer camp – IAI is a one-week residential program, July 17-23, 2011, for students grades 9-12 interested in aerospace engineering and aviation, held on the campus of the University of Illinois At Urbana-Champaign. Students learn about a variety of topics relating to aerospace engineering through classroom sessions, laboratories, demonstrations, and hands-on activities. Cost.$700. Application Deadline: April 15.
This live-in week long camp at Missouri University of Science and Technology, Rolla, MO., July 17-22, 2011, gives girls in grades 11 and 12 the opportunity to explore career options that help society while protecting the environment. Attendees live together in a residential hall, meet current female student leaders and professors, participate in team projects and field trips, and explore the science and engineering behind a green environment. Cost: $350. Application Deadline: July 10, 2011.
2010 Summer Institute in Engineering: Engineering the Elements – Polymers and Electronic Ceramics. This exciting residential program at Alfred University, June 27-July 1, 2010, offers students in grades 11 and 12 an opportunity to learn more about engineering; to sample life on a college campus; and to meet other students with similar interests and academic ability. Students will participate in hands-on lab experiences focusing on polymers and electronic ceramics. Cost: $795. Application Deadline: April 16, 2010
The 2010 BadgerBOTS Robotics Summer Daycamp will be held at Memorial High School, Madison, Wisconsin for students in grades 4 through 8th. The camp is designed to teach campers everything about basic principles of design, programming, and the engineering process through the creation of LEGO robots. The activities allow students of all ability levels and experience to learn new skills and build a genuine pride in their accomplishments. The camp includes fieldtrips to the planetarium for robots in space and possibly other local sites. Dates: Four sessions, from July 25-August 19. Cost: $500.
This six-day residential program at University of Dayton, July 10-15, introduces high school women, grades 10-12 to career opportunities in engineering. Participants experience a total immersion into the world of engineering through classroom activities and participatory experiments. The young women enjoy an evening of Dinner with an Engineer and hear from professional women engineers ready to share and willing to encourage. One day of camp is spent at a sponsoring industry observing engineers. Rising sophomores through seniors. Cost:$475. Application Deadline: June 1, 2011. 
Project SMART (Science and Mathematics Achievement through Research Training) is a 4-week Summer Institute at the University of New Hampshire, July 5-29, 2011, for talented high school students in grades 10 and 11. It challenges, educates, and motivates students in science and mathematics while acquainting them with the environment and resources of the University as a place for higher education and research. Cost: $3,000 for full four weeks, $2,500 without weekend stays.Applications accepted until all places are filled.
