Despite the anxiety triggered by last spring’s nuclear disaster in Japan, nuclear power is still a key part of this country’s energy mix. Industry and universities are enlisting help from teachers in preparing the next generation of nuclear engineers and technicians.

The NASA Endeavor Science Teaching Certificate Project awards one-year fellowships each year to over 40 current and prospective teachers. Endeavor Fellows receive award-winning STEM Professional Development, taking graduate courses in an innovative, LIVE (online) format from the comfort of their home or school. 
Johns Hopkins University’s Engineering for Professionals (EP) program, part of the Whiting School of Engineering, will provide free tuition beginning with the summer term to Maryland public and private high school teachers who want to further their professional development in STEM disciplines.
The AFCEA Educational Foundation is offering 50 scholarships of $5,000 each to students actively pursuing an undergraduate degree, graduate degree, or credential/licensure for the purpose of teaching STEM (science, technology, engineering, or math) subjects at a U.S. middle or secondary school. Application Deadline: May 1, 2011. 
This week-long, standards-aligned teacher workshop, June 6-10, 2011 is being held at San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park for those K-5 teachers. The workshop will explore investigation skills through the lens of forest ecosystems. Topics covered include climate, plant and animal interactions, and conservation. The workshop is designed to make science teaching more exciting and accessible for kindergarten through fifth grade teachers. Cost: $100 ($50 refunded upon course completion).
Science teachers from public, private, and parochial K‐12 schools in the New York metropolitan area are invited to apply for Summer Research Fellowships at Columbia University’s Summer Research Program for Science Teachers, with awards for to 10 K-12 science teachers. Deadline PASSED. Stipend: $5,000 per summer plus $1,000 in classroom/laboratory supply funds.
The Plasma Science and Fusion Energy Institute at the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory, New Jersey, is a one-week intensive workshop, July 11 – 15, 2011, designed to provide the opportunity for Physics teachers, grades 9-12, and Middle School teachers of advanced physical science, to study plasma physics and fusion energy through experimental research in our state-of-the-art laboratories. Application deadline: May 27, 2011.
NACME STEM Innovation Grants provide teachers in inner-city communities with funding (up to $1000) for projects that make students aware of opportunities to be found in engineering. The projects are aimed at turning classroom lessons into real-world applications that bring STEM concepts to life.
The Art of Science Learning explores ways in which the arts can help improve how people of all ages learn the sciences. Using hands-on, imaginative approaches to science education, the Art of Science Learning is convening scientists, artists, educators, business leaders, researchers, and policymakers in three conferences in Spring 2011.
