Defense contractor General Dynamics, facing an engineer shortage, has developed a program for developing young engineering talent. Eighteen seventh- and eight-grade students who have shown some math and science skills were selected for eCrew, which focuses on giving the students hands-on projects, like launching rockets and building working model cranes.

Five California State Universities have received a Learn and Serve America Higher Education grant totaling $1.5 million from The Corporation for National and Community Service. The grant is based on California State University-San Bernardino’s CoyoteCareers program. It will fund a new program, “STEM SQUARED,” which will support service learning in STEM disciplines, as well as academic support, career skills training, and networking opportunities.

Thanks to a $7 million government grant, Carnegie Mellon University’s Fostering Innovation through Robotics Exploration (FIRE) program is giving kids hands-on experience with robots. The researchers hope to combat a national decline in the number of college students majoring in science, engineering, and math.

Educators say that the best way to get kids interested in engineering is to start teaching the basics at a very young age. That’s an axiom that engineering academics at Behrend College, part of the Pennsylvania State University System, have clearly taken to heart, according to the Erie Times News. They recently introduced a Play with Engineering program for 4- and 5-year-olds at the college’s Early Learning Center.

High school students throughout the United States are invited to participate in NASA’s 2010-2011 Interdisciplinary National Science Program Incorporating Research Experience, or INSPIRE, a multitier year-round program designed for students in grades 9 to 12th who are interested in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education and careers. Applications are being accepted through June 30, 2010.

Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum, Smithsonian Institution, New York City, offers perspectives on the impact of design on daily life through educational and curatorial programming.
Collections include more than 250,000 design objects and a design library, while exhibitions, educational programs, and an on-site, degree-granting master’s program explore the process of design, both historic and contemporary. Teachers may be particularly interested in the online Educators Resource Center, which provides lesson plans, videos, and links to other on-line resources.

The Engineering/Technology Careers Exploring Program, from Learning for Life, along with the American Society for Engineering Education, is introducing more youth to careers in engineering and technology. These and other organizations are launching a 2010—2012 Engineering/Technology Careers Emphasis campaign in April. Presently, Learning for Life serves close to 1 million youth in over 14,000 schools and organizations across the country.

The College of Southern Maryland, La Plata campus will be using the popular VEX Robotics Competition Clean Sweep game in their Senior division robotics competition on April 10. The Junior division, taking place on the same date, is called “The Save the Bay Robotics Competition,” and it consists of eight robotic challenges designed to mimic the types of tasks a robot would accomplish if it was cleaning up the Chesapeake Bay. The Junior division is for elementary and middle school students, while the Senior division is for high school students. This is a regional event that draws teams from Maryland, D.C., and Northern Virginia.
