Tennessee Governor Phil Bredesen recently signed an executive order establishing the Tennessee STEM Innovation Network, which will work to promote and expand the teaching of STEM subjects in schools across the state. The network will operate out of the state’s Department of Education, which will work with local school districts to coordinate STEM education activities, including curriculum and professional development.

The world’s number two professional golfer Phil Mickelson says that some of his success on the links comes from a firm grasp of math and science — he can calculate the odds of sinking a putt from how many feet away the ball is from the hole, for example. Today, the Mickelson ExxonMobile Teacher Academy in Jersey City, N.J. is helping third, fourth, and fifth grade science teachers hone their math and science teaching skills.

The Junior Engineering Technical Society (JETS) is a national non-profit education organization dedicated to promoting engineering and helping students discover their potential for the profession. JETS engages students in a variety of educational programs that increase awareness of what engineers do and show how math and science are used to make tangible differences in the world.

The National Science Resources Center (NSRC) was established in 1985 by the Smithsonian Institution and the National Academies. Its mission is to improve the learning and teaching of science for all students in the United States and throughout the world. It provides listings of regional science centers, museums, science websites and other resources; information on how to participate in programs to improve science education; and NSRC internships.

The NASA Goddard Space Flight Center is looking for successful summer and other out-of-school programs that can be show to provide improved academic achievement of participants and a focus on STEM careers and career pathways. Proposals will be accepted until July 16 from non-profit organizations, state-based educational leadership organizations, and U.S. school districts.
