The Cornell Center for Materials Research offers excellent education resources for teachers, including Lending Library of Experiments, with science and engineering lesson plans and activity sheets. Teachers in the area can borrow kits associated with these activities, free of charge, and arrange classroom and lab visits for their students.

The Carnegie Council announces its second Annual Student Essay Competition. The essay question: How would you improve your school so that it prepares future leaders to protect the planet? and a copy of Ethics & International Affairs: A Reader. This year, the competition is open to teachers as well as students. Prizes include $250 – $75 Amazon Gift certificate.Deadline: December 31, 2010.

Baltimore’s Maryland Science Center invites everyone to join Harry Potter Day, November 20, 2010. The screening of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” in the IMAX theater, will be accompanied by day filled with activities for kids of all ages, from the creation of chemical potions, to a hunt for horcruxes, and mapping of the stars. Cost: Free with paid admission and for members.
The Discovery Science Center in Santa Ana, CA, is seeking delectable gingerbread creativity from children, adults, businesses, and organizations. Try your hand at creating a delicious masterpiece out of gingerbread, icing, and other edibles in this year’s competition. Submissions accepted Nov. 20-29, 2010 and on display November 26, 2010 – January 2, 2011. 
The 2011 SeaWorld and Busch Gardens Environmental Excellence Awards recognize the efforts of students and teachers across the country who are working at the grassroots level to protect and preserve the environment. All K-12 schools in the United States and formally recognized school groups, such as a grade level, classroom or club are eligible to apply. Public, private and licensed home schools are also eligible. Awards include $10,000 for eight award-winning projects and all expenses-paid trip to a SeaWorld or Busch Gardens park for the awards event. DEADLINE: Dec. 1, 2010. 
“Live with the Land” marks the first of a series of live, online conferences from the Smithsonian Institution. Polar Bear International’s Tundra Connections invites students and teachers to join free live Webcasts on Nov. 15 and 16, 2010, to talk with leading polar bear scientists, zoologists, and educators as they conduct live broadcasts that are informative and educational, focusing on the topics of polar bears and climate change. This full-day workshop on December 4, 2010, 9am – 4pm, from the Center for Engineering Education and Outreach, Tufts University, is intended to provide an immersive introduction of stop-motion animation to K-16 teachers using SAM Animation.
