The U.S. Department of Energy maintains a list of all National Laboratories and Technology Centers that it funds. DOE’s laboratories and technology centers house world-class facilities where cutting-edge research is performed. There are 21 labs and centers across the United States. Through this DOE portal, it’s easy to locate lab or center near you.

When the Space Shuttle program is grounded later this year, after nearly 30 years of service, quite a few scientists, engineers, and technicians could find themselves jettisoned into the ranks of the unemployed. So why not turn some of them into teachers? That’s the notion behind the proposed Space to School Act introduced in Congress by Democratic Rep. Suzanne Kosmas, of Florida, reports the Orlando Sentinel.

Multi-program Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee has a long history of linking with academia. Currently ORNL has educational programs in place for all scientific disciplines, and for all levels, from pre-college through postgraduate. ORNL offers educational and research experiences, scholarships, internships, summer day camps, symposiums, educational tours, financial aid to Tennessee schools, and speaking engagements.

A Houston area school district plans to open an Academy of Game Design this fall at Willowridge High School. Students will learn the basics of game design, including 2D and 3D animation, graphics, lighting, and sound mixing. Computer game developer Rodney Gibbs applauds the idea. His work invovles a great deal of calculus, physics, engineering, computer science,” he says. But for young people, “video games are like the cheese on broccoli.”

These resources include teacher programs, educational events, workshops, reference materials, hands-on activities, worksheets, online and paper games and puzzles, lesson plans and experiments, distance learning programs, and online interactive tools. Using a plasma ball or lightning globe, students in grades 3-5 test various objects to see if they pull the electric current generated by the globe to them. Students then explore how the globe excited electrons inside the fluorescent bulbs to make them light.
