K-12 Solution for NASA Layoffs

Space Shuttle Endeavour's Crew Signing Autographs

When the Space Shuttle program is grounded later this year, after nearly 30 years of service, quite a few scientists, engineers, and technicians could find themselves jettisoned into the ranks of the unemployed. So, why not turn some of them into teachers? That’s the notion behind the proposed Space to School Act introduced in Congress by Democratic Rep. Suzanne Kosmas, of Florida, reports the Orlando Sentinel.

To be sure, Florida has a large space industry workforce, so the state would stand to benefit from the legislation, which would ease the way for laidoff aerospace workers to teach STEM subjects at K-12 and vocational schools. It’s hoped that beyond having a firm grasp of the subject matter, ex-shuttle workers could inspire kids with tales of their firsthand experiences in the space program, the Sentinel says. The bill would provide $5,000 for each participant, to help cover the cost of earning a teaching certificate. Additionally, those who commit to teaching at least three years at a high-needs school would be eligible for another $5,000 bonus. Says Kosmas: “ . . . encouraging them to become STEM teachers is a win-win solution that can benefit our economy now and in the future.”
