Students’ Summer: Music Tech at Drexel U. Aug. 2-6

Drexel University’s Summer Music Technology (SMT) program August 2-6, 2010, introduces high school students (esp. grades 10 and 11) to the technology of digital music to reveal the influence and importance of engineering, science, and mathematics in music performance, recording, and listening. Delaware and Tennessee Win 1st Round of Race to the Top

Delaware and Tennessee won the first round of grants in the U.S. Department of Education’s $4 billion Race to the Top Fund competition. Delaware will get $100 million, and Tennessee $500 million. The competition is aimed at encouraging states to create conditions for education reform.

Museum and Online Resource: NYC’s Cooper-Hewitt Design Museum

Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum, Smithsonian Institution, New York City, offers perspectives on the impact of design on daily life through educational and curatorial programming.

Collections include more than 250,000 design objects and a design library, while exhibitions, educational programs, and an on-site, degree-granting master’s program explore the process of design, both historic and contemporary. Teachers may be particularly interested in the online Educators Resource Center, which provides lesson plans, videos, and links to other on-line resources.

Students’ Summer: Girls’ Engineering at Fresno State. 12-16 July, 2010

The Lyles College of Engineering at California State University, Fresno, invites central San Joaquin Valley high school girls, grades 10-12, to attend the 2010 Girls Summer Engineering Experience (SEE), 12-16 July, 2010. This week-long day camp is for girls interested in engineering or construction management. Structured hands-on activities, speakers, technical workshops and field trips will make it a fun filled educational experience for all participants. Cost : $250, ($200 for Girls SEE Alumni). Application deadline: May 28, 2010. No new information for 2011.

The Engineering/Technology Careers Exploring Program

Engineering Exploring LogoThe Engineering/Technology Careers Exploring Program, from Learning for Life, along with the American Society for Engineering Education, is introducing more youth to careers in engineering and technology. These and other organizations are launching a 2010—2012 Engineering/Technology Careers Emphasis campaign in April. Presently, Learning for Life serves close to 1 million youth in over 14,000 schools and organizations across the country.

Does ‘No Child’ Draft Shortchange Science?

Congress has begun work on reauthorizing the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), which became known as No Child Left Behind (NCLB) during the Bush years. The Department of Education’s “blueprint” for a new ESEA has largely won warm reviews from lawmakers in both parties. But, the American Institute of Physics (AIP) is unhappy that the proposal doesn’t put more emphasis on science education.

Majority of Teachers Happy with Jobs

A healthy majority of teachers describe themselves as satisfied with their careers, according to a recent study released by MetLife. Only 17 percent of respondents said they were very or fairly likely to exit the profession within the next five years.
