The National Youth Science Camp (NYSC) is a free residential science education program for young scientists the summer after they graduate from high school. Students from around the country are challenged academically with hands-on studies and lectures, and they have voluntary opportunities to participate in an outdoor adventure program.

The summer break will cost many students a month of learning, a sweeping new study by the nonprofit RAND Corporation and the Wallace Foundation reports. The setbacks also are cumulative, disproportionately affecting pupils from low-income families and all but guaranteeing a permanent achievement gap. The good news: quality summer programs can help stave off summer slide.

Exciting Discovery for Girls in Engineering (EDGE) is a residential camp at Purdue University geared for girls who have completed the 9th or 10th grade and want to explore the engineering field. EDGE provides an overview of engineering concepts through hands-on workshops and introduces the participants to various engineering fields. Dates: July 24 – 29 and July 31 – Aug. 5, 2011. The Engineering FYI camp from Purdue University is a residential camp for girls who have completed 7th or 8th grade. FYI campers will work with Purdue women engineering students on hands-on activities such as designing materials for disaster relief efforts. Date: June 13 – 17, 2011. The Bagley College of Engineering Summer Research Program, QUEST, provides opportunities for gifted and talented, rising high school seniors three weeks, July 11-29, 2011, working in world-class laboratories at Mississippi State University. The program will expose students to careers in engineering research, and provide an innovative research opportunity. The Center of Science and Industry (COSI) in Columbus, OH, offers several summer science and engineering camps for kids of all ages. Teens can explore amusement park technology, robotics, and video games. Pre-teens can explore planet Earth, aeronautics, and animal adaptations.
