Teachers’ Summer: Princeton Plasma Camp

The Plasma Science and Fusion Energy Institute at the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory, New Jersey, is a one-week intensive workshop, July 11 – 15, 2011, designed to provide the opportunity for Physics teachers, grades 9-12, and Middle School teachers of advanced physical science, to study plasma physics and fusion energy through experimental research in our state-of-the-art laboratories. The Mickelson ExxonMobil Teachers Academy is a one-week all-expense-paid intensive professional development program in the summer for third- through fifth-grade teachers. The Academy offers a five-day program designed to provide third- through fifth-grade teachers with the knowledge and skills necessary to motivate students to pursue careers in science and math. Author Mary Roach speaks at an evening lecture at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. on Wed., Aug. 4, to discuss her new book Packing for Mars: The Curious Science of Life in the Void. She describes how astronauts prepare for and endure their trips to space, what happens when you don’t walk on the ground for a year, and the overall experience of space simulations. Cost: $25 Gen. Admission, $15 Member. Program Ended.
Experience hands-on science activities at the National Academies of Sciences’ Koshland Science Museum in Washington, DC, this June and July 2010, on Saturdays. Learn why some light bulbs are more efficient than others; investigate how hydrogen can be used as an every day fuel; and explore how immunization, antibiotics, and public health measures help prevent the spread of infectious diseases. Admission (to museum): Adults: $5.00; Students, Children, and Seniors: $3.00. No 2011 events scheduled, yet.
NASA’s new 
The MIST Teacher Workshop, July 28-30, 2010, introduces high school teachers to the structure and teaching strategies used in the Merit Program at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The main goal is to help teachers feel confident in implementing this new method in their own classrooms and to introduce you to other teachers in your subject area to create a community of support. The majority of the workshop time will be devoted to experiencing the Merit teaching style and giving teachers the opportunity to develop materials they can take back to their own institutions. Stipend: $200, housing, food, and travel allowance. No new information provided for 2011.
Google is hosting the first Google Geo Teachers Institute, July 21-22, 2010, at Mountain View, California. This free professional development experience is designed to help educators get the most from Google’s Geo products and technologies, including Google Earth, SketchUp, and Maps, including Mars, Moon, and Sky in Google Earth. Attendees will learn about innovative instructional strategies and receive resources to share with colleagues. No new information for 2011.
The Energy & Engineering Institute is a two-day hands-on workshop, August 9-10, 2010, for 20 middle school science and technology education teachers. The professional development will blend middle school science concepts for renewable energy with hands-on engineering design to raise awareness of the challenge to provide sustainable energy resources to meet growing world demand. Location: Stevens Institute of Technology, Hoboken. Application deadline: May 25, 2010. Stipend: $200; $110 classroom materials; professional development credit. No new information for 2011.
The Aquatic Systems: Emerging Problems and Creative Solutions Institute, University of Florida, July 12-16, 2010, highlights significant research on Florida coastal and inland aquatic systems. Activities include field work and laboratory activities suitable for all classes. The course emphasizes contaminants that affect human and environmental health. Eligibility: Secondary School Science Teachers. Cost: $450. Application Deadline: Not stated, but early registration encouraged. Update to be announced Spring 2011.
