More public high school students are taking and succeeding at AP exams than 10 years ago, a new report from the College Board reveals. Maryland tops the nation, with 24.8 percent of students passing at least one AP test, compared with a national average of 16.9 percent.

Top achievers in Advanced Placement science and mathematics courses from each state recently won 2010 Siemens Awards for Advanced Placement. The annual awards confer a $2,000 college scholarship to one male and one female student who aced the greatest number of AP exams in subjects ranging from Biology to Calculus BC to Physics C.

The 2011 Davidson Fellowships recognize high-achieving young people with scholarships of $50,000, $25,000 or $10,000 that can must be used at any accredited institute of learning. Applicants must submit an original piece of work recognized by experts as significant and with the potential to make a positive contribution to society. Areas in the program include Science, Technology, Mathematics, Music, Literature, Philosophy, or “Outside the Box.” The deadline to apply is March 2, 2011, with preliminary deadlines on February 2 and 16, 2011.

NASA doesn’t just have missions for exploring and understanding space. The agency has a long tradition of involvement in STEM education. One program, the NASA Endeavor Science Teaching Certificate Project, awards 40 fellowships per year to science teachers. The 18-month program features workshops, online and on-site graduate courses, and materials teachers can use in the classroom.
