Top achievers in Advanced Placement science and mathematics courses from each state recently won 2010 Siemens Awards for Advanced Placement. The annual awards confer a $2,000 college scholarship to one male and one female student who aced the greatest number of AP exams in subjects ranging from Biology to Calculus BC to Physics C.

This week-long residential program, June 6-10, 2010, is designed to provide a fun and introductory engineering, science, and technology experience for girls entering 7th and 8th grades. When the Intel Science Talent Search semifinalists were announced last month, two high schools had more than any other in the country. Ossining High School, part of a very diverse, increasingly Hispanic town in Westchester County, best known for Sing Sing Correctional Facility, was one of the two.

The 2011 ThinkQuest International Competition challenges students to apply their critical thinking, communication, and technology skills to a real-world problem. Teams research, develop, and test their solution before presenting it to a global audience. Students and their coaches put their ideas and skills to the test in one of three events.

The Camp-In programs at COSI Columbus described as the “ultimate indoor camping experience for girls and boys,” has taken environmental “Green” as its 2011 theme. NASA’s “Kids in Micro-g” challenge calls for students in grades five through eight to design a classroom experiment that can also be performed by astronauts aboard the International Space Station. The “Kids in Micro-g” challenge calls for the experiments to examine the effect of weightlessness on various subjects.

The 2011 SeaWorld and Busch Gardens Environmental Excellence Awards recognize the efforts of students and teachers across the country who are working at the grassroots level to protect and preserve the environment. All K-12 schools in the United States and formally recognized school groups, such as a grade level, classroom or club are eligible to apply. Public, private and licensed home schools are also eligible. Awards include $10,000 for eight award-winning projects and all expenses-paid trip to a SeaWorld or Busch Gardens park for the awards event. DEADLINE: Dec. 1, 2010.
