EarthEcho International, a nonprofit environmental education group founded by the grandchildren of legendary underwater explorer Jacques Yves Cousteau, seeks 15 individuals to serve on its first Youth Leadership Council. To mark the 25th anniversary of its student essay contest, DuPont created a series of downloadable STEM all-star trading cards. Use them to inspire your writers to participate in this year’s DuPont Challenge. Deadline is January 31, 2016.
In this activity, students in grades 3 to 12 learn how design differences can affect the success of a final product by working in pairs to evaluate, design, and build a better candy bag. They must predict the volume and strength of their designs, test and redesign the bag based on its ability to hold weight, discuss findings, and share results.
The American Society for Engineering Education administers two paid summer research programs for students in U.S. Navy laboratories: The Science and Engineering Apprenticeship Program (SEAP) for high school students, and the Naval Research Enterprise Internship Program (NREIP) for college and graduate school students. Deadline for applications, transcripts, and recommendation letters is October 23, 2015.
In this lesson to teach middle school students how a spacecraft gets from the surface of the Earth to Mars, students first investigate rockets and how they are able to get us into space, then discuss the nature of an orbit as well as how orbits enable us to get from planet to planet.
High school students working in teams of four learn how a device made with dye from berries can be used to convert light energy into electrical energy by building their own organic solar cells and measuring performance based on power output.
In this activity, student teams in grades 8 and up learn about the engineering design process and physical forces by building a bridge from a single sheet of paper and up to five paper clips that will span 20 cm and support the weight of 100 pennies. Like real engineers, teams also have limited budgets and must make trade-offs in materials.
Pow! Kaboom! Building on the surging popularity of the Avengers, Batman, Captain America and other movie superheroes, the National Science Foundation and National Nanotechnology Initiative have launched a new competition to encourage students to “think big” and pursue STEM.
The National Youth Science Camp (NYSC), one of the country’s premier science education programs, offers graduating high school seniors a month of outdoor adventure and hands-on projects in the beautiful woods near Bartow, W.V., all travel costs and camp fees paid.
