Fermilab, the National Accelerator Laboratory just outside Chicago, Illinois, offers a wealth of science resources for students and teachers, including online videos, databases, activities and lesson plans. Local teachers will want to visit the Teacher Resource Center and bring their students to the Lederman Science Center.

The National Education Association (NEA) Green Grants for K-12 teachers invites public school educators to apply for individual grants worth up to $5,000 for the development and implementation of ideas, techniques, and approaches for teaching “green” concepts to students. The Green Grants program targets environmental education as an area of great promise in helping students develop a sense of environmental stewardship.

Break It Down: Reverse Engineering

In this lesson for grades 5-8, students learn how the process of reverse engineering helps improve technology. Students analyze the mechanisms of a push-toy then disassemble it and draw its inner mechanisms. They then make suggestions for improvements: effectiveness, improved functionality, ecological friendliness, and any additional functionality. Time required: 90 minutes.

In this essay contest of EngineerGirl!, National Academy of Engineering, students are challenged to think like an engineer to solve a survival problem. In their essays, they must describe how to use the contents of a backpack and the surrounding environment to create shelter, gather food and water, or summon rescue. Disney’s Green Classroom Challenge, Dec. 18, 2009

Disney’s Planet Challenge project-based environmental competition for 4th – 6th grade classrooms invites students to identify a local environmental issue and devise a solution that they manage and document from start to finish. Event: Gizmo Expo, Bucknell U., Dec. 7


Bucknell University will host its 4th annual Engineering and Science Education Expo Mon., Dec. 7. More than 50 student teams will share inquiry-based teaching units and gizmos designed to teach science and engineering concepts to K-8 students.
