Wilderness Engineers

Their work may be invisible when you visit America’s 758 wilderness areas, but engineers have played a key role in preserving and improving access to the country’s most pristine spots, including “road kill apps” and critter crossings to measure and reduce collisions between people and wildlife.

Working with students from the University of Maryland and Brigham Young University, NASA engineers have created a free, alternative-reality game called DUST designed to get teens – particularly young women and minorities – interested in STEM. The challenge: Figure out how to save their parents after meteorites drop a mysterious dust that knocks out adults worldwide.
Ever walk through a store’s toy department and wonder: Who dreams up these action figures, games, and other fun stuff? Toy engineers do! They get to play for a living, designing and making new toys to engage or educate kids of all ages.
Engineering and science majors may have to log long hours doing labs and problem sets. But that doesn’t mean they must abandon their hoop dreams. In fact, engineering students – including many on MIT’s men’s basketball team, the Engineers – have long distinguished themselves on the court.
In recognition of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month 2012, ASEE salutes the achievements of these remarkable engineers and engineering educators: Amar Bose, Kalpana Chawla, Yuan-Cheng Fung, Ellison Onizuka, Arati Prabhakar, Chang-Lin Tien, and An Wang.
