Flipside Science is a youth-produced educational video series developed by teachers and the California Academy of Science that tackles complex environmental engineering topics and empowers middle school students to make a difference. 
The American Statistical Association hosts an annual poster competition for K-12 students to showcase their ability to apply and display data. Winners will receive up to $300 and Texas Instrument calculators. Submit by April 1, 2017.
The STEM Voice™ Video Competition asks kids in grades 5-12 to create short videos that show the importance of science, technology, engineering, and math. They can act in it, create an animation, sing – the video just has to be appropriate for all viewers. Winners can receive up to $700 in cash awards. Apply by May 22, 2017. 
Hands-on projects and visits with federal scientists and engineers are among the highlights of the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s summer institute for middle school teachers, which takes place July 10 to 21, 2017 at NIST’s headquarters in Gaithersburg, Md. Participants will receive a $2,000 stipend and up to $2,000 to cover travel and lodging expenses. Apply by March 3, 2017.
Working with a teacher, teams of up to 4 students pick a current technology, research it, envision what it might look like in 20 years, and describe the development steps, pros and cons, and obstacles. Submissions are due February 6, 2017.
Results from America’s first-ever test of K-12 technology and engineering literacy point to the power of hands-on, applied STEM learning – both in and outside of school – to increase diversity and achievement. The National Assessment of Educational Progress found that girls scored higher on average than boys. And while suburban and rural students outperformed their urban peers, the achievement gaps between race and income groups were much smaller than typically posted on national tests in other subjects.
Mission to Mars, CubeSats, and Polymers for the Planet are among the hands-on engineering units developed by 4th to 8th grade science teachers in a unique partnership between the Boeing Company and the Teaching Channel.
