The UMass Nanotechnology Summer Institute will explore the basic science and engineering concepts of this exciting new field, and will illustrate how they may be integrated into the usual math, science and technology courses in middle schools and high schools. The Washington Science Teachers’ Association (WSTA) will hold its annual conference, March 12 – 14, 2010. The Science Museum of Virginia is pleased to offer a “week in the field” for teachers interested in teaching environmental science to their students. Workshops are open to teachers of any grade. Workshops are scheduled throughout the year and correlated with the Virginia Standards of Learning.

The Amgen Award for Science Teaching Excellence (AASTE) recognizes extraordinary contributions by educators from California, Colorado, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Puerto Rico, Rhode Island, Washington, and Canada (Alberta, British Columbia, Ontario and Quebec), who are elevating science literacy. 34 winners receive an unrestricted cash award of $5,000 USD ($5,000 CAD). Recipients’ schools receive a restricted grant of $5,000 USD ($5,000 CAD) for the enhancement of a school science program, for science resources, or for the professional development of the school’s science teachers. Application deadline: February 5, 2010.

The STEM-Up Initiative, based in the Boyle Heights area of East Los Angeles, is designed to integrate STEM career pathways into schools and local communities. STEM-Up aims to connect 80,000 residents to the surrounding STEM Community, consisting of institutions of higher learning, government agencies, corporations and other organizations.
