Teachers’ Summer: Nanotechnology at Stanford. July 18-22

Stanford University’s Center for Probing the Nanoscale (CPN) offers a one-week Summer Institute for Middle School Teachers. Daily sessions focus on content lectures and inquiry-based modules that explicitly address California’s 5-8th grade physical science content standards. Teachers will also receive a hands-on activity classroom kit with many fun activities that bring nanoscience into the classroom. Dates: July 18-22, 2011. Eligibility: Middle School teachers, grades 5-8. Stipend: $650, plus professional development units. Application deadline: May 1 , 2011.

Students’ Summer: Lego Robotics Classes

Lego RoboticsThe Journey Museum in Rapids City, SD, is offering two NASA LEGO-Robotics workshops for students, June 9, 2011 and August 4, 2011. Participants will engage in challenges that can be shared with students to encourage the use of imagination, problem-solving skills and team work. Cost: $25 per workshop, $15 for members.

Event: Science in Golden Gate Park. San Francisco. June 6-10, 2011

science-park3This week-long, standards-aligned teacher workshop, June 6-10, 2011 is being held at San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park for those K-5 teachers. The workshop will explore investigation skills through the lens of forest ecosystems. Topics covered include climate, plant and animal interactions, and conservation. The workshop is designed to make science teaching more exciting and accessible for kindergarten through fifth grade teachers. Cost: $100 ($50 refunded upon course completion).

Teachers’ Summer: Online Engineering Workshops, March 7 and June 20, 2011

tec_defaultEngineering the Future® Online Course is a moderated four-week online course, March 7 and June 20, 2011, offered by Boston’s Museum of Science, and covering the same engineering education material as the three-day institute held at the museum. It is ideal for high school teachers from other regions, or for those who prefer to study online. Online participants perform hands-on activities, interacting with course content for about six hours per week. Additional time for designing and building projects is also required. Cost: $150.

The Plasma Science and Fusion Energy Institute at the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory, New Jersey, is a one-week intensive workshop, July 11 – 15, 2011, designed to provide the opportunity for Physics teachers, grades 9-12, and Middle School teachers of advanced physical science, to study plasma physics and fusion energy through experimental research in our state-of-the-art laboratories.
