Applications for the 2014 Google RISE (Roots in Science and Engineering) Awards are due September 30. Organizations can receive up to $50,000 to expand successful K-12 computer science programs or include computer science in STEM programs aimed at girls and underrepresented minorities.

The SMART Competition invites high school students to apply their knowledge of science, math, physics, and engineering to develop intelligent-building solutions for a world increasingly dependent on energy efficiency, redesign, and reuse, This year’s challenge is to redesign an existing high school gym. Students will be mentored by design and engineering professionals, and use the same techniques and tools as the country’s best design firms.

Students learn about the importance of using the right materials for the job by building three different sand castles and testing them for strength and resistance to weathering. They then discuss how the buildings are different and what engineers need to think about when using rocks, soils, and minerals for construction.
