Girls in the California Bay area who may have never met an engineer now have an introduction – and more. Through the Chabot Space & Science Center, the Techbridge program connects girls with female technical role models with student groups, engaging them in hands-on activities, workplace tours, and school visits. And Techbridge mentors the mentors, ensuring they know how to inspire students’ passion for learning. “Opening Minds, Raising Sights,” from the December issue of Prism magazine, describes the appeal of the program.

At COSI’s Girls Discover…Engineering! program on Saturday, October 16, 2010 , girls will meet mentors from the Ohio State University’s Women in Engineering program; solve a Design Challenge; and take part in hands-on workshops led by women engineers. A woman and a Latina, Alba Colon is a leader of a new generation of engineers in a sport — auto racing — long dominated by white men. After a few years in data acquisition, Colon entered racing management, becoming GM Racing’s Chevrolet program manager in 2001 — the only top-ranking female engineer in NASCAR and a key point of contact between drivers, owners, and crew chiefs.

The Lyles College of Engineering at California State University, Fresno, invites central San Joaquin Valley high school girls, grades 10-12, to attend the 2010 Girls Summer Engineering Experience (SEE), 12-16 July, 2010. This week-long day camp is for girls interested in engineering or construction management. Structured hands-on activities, speakers, technical workshops and field trips will make it a fun filled educational experience for all participants. Cost : $250, ($200 for Girls SEE Alumni). Application deadline: May 28, 2010. No new information for 2011.

A recent survey of women and underrepresented minorities who hold STEM degrees found that many of them were discouraged from seeking their careers. But, what was, perhaps, eyebrow-raising was that most of those affected said the discouragement came from college professors.

The interview profiles of young women at the start of their science careers tell their stories of passion and persistence —what drives and excites them about their work in the sciences. Women in Aviation & Space, held at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, outside Washington, DC, Saturday, March 13, highlights the many achievements of women in science, technology, and aerospace.
