The American Society for Engineering Education administers two paid summer research programs for students in U.S. Navy laboratories: The Science and Engineering Apprenticeship Program (SEAP) for high school students, and the Naval Research Enterprise Internship Program (NREIP) for college and graduate school students. Deadline for applications, transcripts, and recommendation letters is October 23, 2015.

Can cash incentives boost student interest and achievement in science, technology, engineering, and math? The U.S. Navy must think so, for it has signed onto a White House effort to support military families that includes a public-private national STEM initiative that, among other things, pays bonuses to those who score well on Advanced Placement exams.

The Naval Research Enterprise Intern Program (NREIP), provides an opportunity for university students to participate in research at a Department of Navy laboratory during the summer. This ten-week intern program is designed to provide opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students to participate in research, under the guidance of an appropriate research mentor. The last day to submit an application will be January 6, 2012.

The U.S. Navy now spends $60 million a year on STEM education, but Navy Secretary Ray Mabus wants to double that amount over five years, officials say. The expanded effort is directed particularly at elementary and middle school students in rural and urban communities – not just areas with existing naval facilities – and at university freshmen and sophomores, too many of whom now drop out of science and engineering.

NSAP is a U.S. Navy and Marine Corps program that recognizes the accomplishments of students at eligible regional and state science and engineering fairs and the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in producing and presenting quality science and engineering projects. Teachers can visit the NSAP Website to gain informaton; register an eligible science fair; or sign up to volunteer as a NSAP judge or presenter.

A simulated shipwreck tested students from four Boston-area schools, who, through the MIT Sea Grant/Sea Perch Program, built remotely operated underwater vehicles to check for leaks of hazardous cargo and salvage the wreck.
