The MIT Museum in Cambridge, Massachusetts offers exhibits, guided tours, workshops, special events, and contests, as well as opportunities to team up with scientists and MIT grads. Through the various programs, students can explore robotics, programming, structural engineering, geometry, DNA, video conferencing technology, and Rube Goldberg Machines.

Chicago’s Museum of Science and Industry is one of the largest science museums in the world, housing more than 35,000 artifacts and nearly 14 acres of hands-on exhibits. the Museum’s Center for the Advancement of Science Education offers student learning labs, after-school science clubs, teen volunteer programs, teacher development classes, and community outreach. Teachers may be particularly interested in the museum’s online activities.

The Mütter Museum, maintained by the College of Physicians of Philadelphia, was founded to educate future doctors about anatomy and human medical anomalies. The museum is devoted to improving the health of the public through its education programs, services, and resources. Mütter provides in-house lessons, download-able workbooks, tours with special group rates, fun videos for students, a junior fellowship program, and a virtual tour.

At the Science Museum of Virginia in Richmond, visitors will find interactive learning and activities at the exhibits: Science Unplugged, Bioscape, Electriworks, Newton in SpacE: bodies in motion, Space Gallery, Virginia Tech Solar House, and the Virginia Tech Solar House. Visitors also will soon be able to visit the green roof project atop the IMAX theater. Museum programs include visiting exhibitions, educational programming, overnight adventures, lectures, demonstrations, live theater and summer camps. Too many science teachers in the U.S. — especially at the elementary and middle school levels — aren’t fully qualified to teach the subject. For instance, more than 70 percent of middle school science teachers in Chicago schools do not have a degree or endorsement in science. To address that problem, Chicago’s Museum of Science and Industry and the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) have teamed up to offer what they say is a first of its kind program to bolster the skills of middle school science teachers.

Facing tight budgets and other pressures, schools are taking fewer museum field trips. So museums are taking their shows on the road, via travel programs, videoconferencing, and computer-based lessons. Yet, some worry that kids will lose out, missing “the wow factor of actually seeing that huge Triceratops skeleton.”
