The Nifty Fifty are a group of engineering and science professionals chosen to fan out across the Washington, DC area October 12 -20 to speak about their work and careers at various middle and high schools. Part of the 2010 USA Science and Engineering Festival, each speaker will make at least one, three-hour commitment, where they provide their own visuals and have lunch with a subset of interested students.

Most National Laboratories offer some form of educational outreach, including workshops, lectures and tours, and make materials available to teachers nationwide via the Web. But, several labs have hit the road in order to bring free science and engineering education directly to nearby schools.

The Arthur M. Sackler Colloquia of the National Academy of Sciences address scientific topics of broad and current interest, cutting across boundaries of traditional disciplines; each year, four to six colloquia are scheduled, and feature presentations by leading scientists in the field and discussions with a hundred or more researchers with an interest in the topic. Colloquia are held at the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Center of the National Academies in Irvine, California, unless noted otherwise.
