Event: Science Colloquia, Irvine, CA

Sackler Colloquia Logo

The Arthur M. Sackler Colloquia of the National Academy of Sciences address scientific topics of broad and current interest, cutting across boundaries of traditional disciplines. Each year, four to six  colloquia are scheduled, typically two days in length and international in scope. Each colloquium is organized by a member of the Academy, often with the assistance of an organizing committee, and feature presentations by leading scientists in the field and discussions with a hundred or more researchers with an interest in the topic. These colloquia are made possible by a generous gift from Jill Sackler, in memory of her husband, Arthur M. Sackler.

Upcoming Colloquia:

In the Light of Evolution IV: The Human Condition Organized by John C. Avise and Francisco J. Ayala, Date: December 10-12, 2009. Location: Beckman Center; Irvine, CA

Meeting Overview:
The year of Darwinian celebration will close with a Sackler Colloquium devoted expressly to human evolution.  Darwin addressed the topic at length in The Descent of Man and Selection in Relation to Sex (1871).  Much has been learned since then, not least from the evidence of paleontology, comparative vertebrate biology, and comparative genomics.  This Sackler Colloquium will bring together leading biologists with special expertise about human evolution, both biological and cultural.
