The National Academy of Engineering’s EngineerGirl! website announced on May 28 the winners of the 2010 EngineerGirl! – Survival Design Challenge Essay Contest. This year’s national contest asked students (grades 3-12) to describe how they would use the clothing or accessories they are wearing and items in the environment to survive or get the attention of a rescue party if they were lost during a field trip to a national forest. More than 800 students submitted essays. Prizes ranged from $500 for first place to certificates for honorable mentions.

It was Girls’ Night Out with a twist for 60 Pittsburgh-area girls investigating a mock crime scene. The hands-on forensics experience was part of a yearlong program at the California University of Pennsylvania that encourages young woman girls to pursue STEM careers.

The Lyles College of Engineering at California State University, Fresno, invites central San Joaquin Valley high school girls, grades 10-12, to attend the 2010 Girls Summer Engineering Experience (SEE), 12-16 July, 2010. This week-long day camp is for girls interested in engineering or construction management. Structured hands-on activities, speakers, technical workshops and field trips will make it a fun filled educational experience for all participants. Cost : $250, ($200 for Girls SEE Alumni). Application deadline: May 28, 2010. No new information for 2011.

Women in Aviation & Space, held at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, outside Washington, DC, Saturday, March 13, highlights the many achievements of women in science, technology, and aerospace. Visitors will learn about the accomplishments of Amelia Earhart , the Women Air Force Service Pilots (WASPs), astronaut Sally Ride, and women who are currently contributing to aviation, science, technology, and space exploration.
