Shell Eco-marathon is a global challenge that motivates high school and college students to drive farther than their peers on one gallon of fuel. Student teams participate in one of or both the Prototype (futuristic design) and UrbanConcept (roadworthy, fuel-efficient) classes.

“The Power of Engineering” is the theme of the Technology Student Association’s 2015 TEAMS (Tests of Engineering Aptitude, Mathematics and Science) competition for middle and high school students. Groups hone their STEM skills and knowledge by addressing real-world challenges related to solar, nuclear, biofuels, and electrical energy, with top-ranked teams invited to participate in the national competition June 28 to July 2, 2015.
Applications for the 2014 Google RISE (Roots in Science and Engineering) Awards are due September 30. Organizations can receive up to $50,000 to expand successful K-12 computer science programs or include computer science in STEM programs aimed at girls and underrepresented minorities.
Saving energy and helping a blind classmate navigate around the school were among the winning mobile app designs that student teams submitted in the Verizon Innovative App Challenge this year. Registration for the 2014/15 contest opens August 4, 2014.
Past winners have improved breast-cancer detection and reduced the health risks from grilling chicken. This year’s Google Science Fair grand prize includes a 10-day trip to the Galapagos Islands and $50,000 in scholarships. The deadline for submitting projects is May 13, 2014.
Do you have a great idea for boosting STEM education? Dow’s STEMtheGap competition, open to all K-12 teachers nationwide, will reward the best 100 ideas with a $1,000 grant. 
To celebrate its 50th Anniversary, the National Academy of Engineering is offering a $25,000 prize for the most inspiring short video focused anywhere in the time period from 1964-2064 that shows how engineering innovations advance human welfare and address societal needs.
The DuPont Challenge is an essay competition for students in grades 7-12 that runs through January 31, 2014. It focuses on scientific and technological developments that create solutions to pressing global challenges, such as feeding the world or protecting the environment. Students and their sponsoring teachers can win more than $100,000 in awards, including a trip to Disney World and NASA’s Kennedy Space Center. 
Middle and high school students can win up to $15,000 for their school by dreaming up the most compelling concept for an education, healthcare, or energy app in the Verizon Innovative App Challenge. Deadline for submission is December 17, 2013.
