Contest: Future City Competition 2010-11

The 19th Annual Future City Competition, held from September 2010 through February, 2011, invites 6th, 7th and 8th grade students from around the nation to team with engineer-volunteer mentors to create — first on computer and then in large, three-dimensional models — their visions of the city of tomorrow.

The Florida Solar Energy Center sponsors two competitions to design, build and race alternative energy model cars: The Hydrogen Sprint for Florida students in grades 9 – 12; and the Junior Solar Sprint (JSS) for Florida students in grades 6-8. The small model cars powered solar or hydrogen energy are built as team efforts guided by teachers.
The Department of Defense’s National Defense Education Program has a number of different services and programs available to teachers and students. The website offers online videos, a search engine for local labs, news, teacher resources, and more. It is divided up into portals for scientists/engineers, teachers, and students respectively.
The RealWorld-InWorld NASA Engineering Design Challenge encourages students in grades 9-12 to explore and build skills essential for successful careers in STEM subjects through two phases of project-based learning and team competition, working with the Webb telescope.
The National Engineering Design Challenge (NEDC) is an annual design competition for students in grades 9-12 to create a workplace technology device for a person with a disability. In this cross-curricular competition, students discover engineering through real-world applications that impact people in their community and change lives. Submission deadline: Dec. 1, 2010.
Plans are already underway for the 20011 International Submarine Race, to be held next summer at the Naval Surface Warfare Center’s Carderock test tank facility in Bethesda, Maryland. The race tests the creative skills of young engineering students from schools and colleges throughout the world, as teams compete in one- and two-person “wet” submarines submerged along a 100-meter measured course.
In partnership with the Myoo Create community, Levi Strauss & Co. is running a competition for designers everywhere to respond to the challenge of how to design the world’s most innovative, covetable, and sustainable air-drying solution for clothing. They’re offering $10,000 prize money to be distributed among the finalists for the most effective solutions, as well as an audience with experienced designers and eco-innovators.
The latest X-Prize Foundation multimillion-dollar engineering and invention contest will tackle the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, with entrants proposing solutions to shorelines and open water sullied by oil from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, which has been gushing since April 20, 2010.
