On the Path to Stronger Math

Teaching Math

Mathematics teachers who want to refine their teaching methods using research-backed strategies might want to check out Teaching and Learning Mathematics, a new volume of articles that presents the latest research findings for improving math education. It’s published by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM). According to a council press release: “Research can demonstrate what is possible for students — what they can learn under specific conditions, how they can reach particular goals, and what kinds of instruction are effective in helping them get there.”

Teaching and Learning Mathematics comes in three volumes: one for administrators, one for elementary school teachers, and the third for teachers in high schools. According to the NCTM, the articles use “practioner-generated questions” that are answered in clear, brief statements that are free of jargon and theory. The articles also include references and a How to Use this Book guide. The NCTM says the book is the latest manifestation of its belief that research is “an important catalyst for change in school mathematics curricula and instruction.”

For more information, check out the council’s website: www.nctm.org. The price? $18.95. NCTM members can get it for $15.16.
