Check out the Ten Cool Sites page of San Francisco’s Exploratorium Museum, posted each month to showcase “a collection of cool, interactive sites from the Web,” focusing on science subjects. The site provides an archive of past editions, those that have been most recommended, a “random cool” selection, and an alphabetized list of categories.

NSAP is a U.S. Navy and Marine Corps program that recognizes the accomplishments of students at eligible regional and state science and engineering fairs and the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in producing and presenting quality science and engineering projects. Teachers can visit the NSAP Website to gain informaton; register an eligible science fair; or sign up to volunteer as a NSAP judge or presenter.

Five California State Universities have received a Learn and Serve America Higher Education grant totaling $1.5 million from The Corporation for National and Community Service. The grant is based on California State University-San Bernardino’s CoyoteCareers program. It will fund a new program, “STEM SQUARED,” which will support service learning in STEM disciplines, as well as academic support, career skills training, and networking opportunities.

The Naval Oceanography Portal website maintains an Astronomical Information Center that contains a variety of informative resources. The directory features a glossary of terms, important definitions, fun facts, in-depth articles, data sets, lists, mathematical equations, and links to outside resources. Some topics include phenomena of the sun and moon, time, calendars and events, computing astronomical data, celestial navigation, and more.

Plans are already underway for the 20011 International Submarine Race, to be held next summer at the Naval Surface Warfare Center’s Carderock test tank facility in Bethesda, Maryland. The race tests the creative skills of young engineering students from schools and colleges throughout the world, as teams compete in one- and two-person “wet” submarines submerged along a 100-meter measured course.

The website features news, lesson plans, activities, data, publications, virtual expeditions, information on science topics, featured websites, teacher-chosen web resources, help in guiding students, science fairs, student programs, and professional development like workshops, grants, awards, courses, distance learning, and summer programs.

Carnegie Mellon’s new Fostering Innovation through Robotics Exploration (FIRE) program, a DARPA-backed effort to increase middle and high schoolers’ interest in STEM and computer science, will support the creation of programs such as game-like virtual worlds where robot programs can be tested and computerized tutors that teach mathematics and computer science in the context of robotics.

Philadelphia’s Franklin Institute is a science museum “in the spirit of inquiry and discovery embodied by Benjamin Franklin” that aims to inspire an understanding of and passion for science and technology learning. It offers visiting and permanent exhibitions, an IMAX theatre, planetarium, and school programs and summer camps. Its Center for Innovation in Science Learning provide educators with helpful resources, links, and news stories.
