The week-long Summer LEGO Engineering Institute at Tufts University, August 2-6 or 9-13, is a way for educators grades K-12 to gain knowledge of engineering concepts, LEGO hardware & software, and associated pedagogy/educational theory. Exploration of the LEGO bricks and related theory will primarily be done through participation in hands-on, open-ended design projects. Cost: $600. Application deadline: none stated, but early enrollment encouraged. No new 2011 information provided.

The University of Texas at Austin will host its 11th annual “Explore UT, The Biggest Open House in Texas!” from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. on Saturday, March 6. More than 50,000 visitors are expected to participate in a day of free activities, performances, demonstrations and lectures. The Cockrell School of Engineering will be hosting a variety of hands-on activities, lectures, and displays. Visitors will see the latest in solar powered vehicles, learn about the reverse engineering of toys, find out how computers really work, and experience biomedical engineering and how engineering is involved in the making of artificial body parts.

KidsQuest Children’s Museum joins NanoDays, the nationwide celebration of nanoscale science. Visit between March 30th and April 11th for daily NanoActivities and view things on a microscopic scale, build a molecular model, create a heat sensor with nanocrystals and conduct other fun nanoscale science experiments.

The Department of Energy Academies Creating Teacher Scientists (DOE ACTS) program provides STEM educators (Grades 5-12) with sustained, intensive professional development that is experientially based and utilizes the wealth of mentoring talent at DOE National Laboratories. Educators integrate the teaching of STEM disciplines with the practice of science, establish long-term relationships with their mentor scientists and teaching colleagues, transferring their experiences to the classroom.
