The NASA Goddard Space Flight Center is looking for successful summer and other out-of-school programs that can be show to provide improved academic achievement of participants and a focus on STEM careers and career pathways. Proposals will be accepted until July 16 from non-profit organizations, state-based educational leadership organizations, and U.S. school districts.

The Berkeley Center for Cosmological Physics Global Teachers’ Academy is seeking student applicants for its fourth annual two week summer workshop for high school students and teachers. The “Physics in and Through Cosmology” workshop will be held at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory adjacent to the University of California, Berkeley Campus beginning Monday, July 19 and ending Friday, July 30. The deadline for applications is June 30.

The California Academy of Sciences offers teacher workshops and class materials on different science subjects; hosts field trips and tours; and provides daily programs, lectures, special events, internships, and contests. The 155-year old museum in San Francisco has a living green roof, an aquarium, a planetarium, and an indoor rainforest.

At the Science Museum of Virginia in Richmond, visitors will find interactive learning and activities at the exhibits: Science Unplugged, Bioscape, Electriworks, Newton in SpacE: bodies in motion, Space Gallery, Virginia Tech Solar House, and the Virginia Tech Solar House. Visitors also will soon be able to visit the green roof project atop the IMAX theater. Museum programs include visiting exhibitions, educational programming, overnight adventures, lectures, demonstrations, live theater and summer camps. Teacher should check the Website for the labs and demonstrations, outreach, and other school program offerings.

Google is hosting the first Google Geo Teachers Institute, July 21-22, 2010, at Mountain View, California. This free professional development experience is designed to help educators get the most from Google’s Geo products and technologies, including Google Earth, SketchUp, and Maps, including Mars, Moon, and Sky in Google Earth. Attendees will learn about innovative instructional strategies and receive resources to share with colleagues. No new information for 2011.

Everyone is welcome to attend the 3rd annual Engineering Film Festival, where short videos produced by Drexel engineering students will be viewed and judged in competition. All films, between 3 minutes and 8 minutes long, PG-rated, relate in some way to the College of Engineering at Drexel University or the field of engineering in general. Come view the creativity of these engineering students and gain ideas for your own classroom and students.

The MIT Traveling Plasma Lab provides a one-hour demonstration of the principles of plasma science. Using a glow discharge plasma, an emission spectrometer, and such ubiquitous substances as nail polish remover, local dirt and a pickle, students discover the unique properties of the plasma state. They role-play as environmental detectives while identifying pollutants in the environment. The lab brings a truck-load of hands-on demonstrations and experiments into schools to show students that science is not an inaccessible topic, but a source of fascination and fun.
