After-school and other informal activities can inspire students to pursue STEM. That’s the impetus for a new challenge launched by the Overdeck Family Foundation and Simons Foundation that invites teachers to submit ideas for creative, hands-on STEM projects that can be done outside of school. Submit ideas by April 30, 2017.

The STEM Voiceâ„¢ Video Competition asks kids in grades 5-12 to create short videos that show the importance of science, technology, engineering, and math. They can act in it, create an animation, sing – the video just has to be appropriate for all viewers. Winners can receive up to $700 in cash awards. Apply by May 22, 2017.

Students in upper elementary/early middle school follow the engineering design process to brainstorm and build prototype sneakers from a variety of materials to meet such design requirements as good traction or deep cushioning. They learn how the sole provides support, cushioning, and traction. There also may be some fashion-based functions, including cool colors or added height.
